Slavonija and Croatian Podunavlje nowadays enjoy the reputation of wine-growing areas that attract a number of wine enthusiasts who prefer continental varieties. Its position, with its topographic borders defined by the watercourses of the Drava, the Danube, and the Sava, and the mountains of the Požega Basin, Fruška gora, Bansko brdo and the loess rises (Aljmaš, Dalj and Erdut Mountain), and with its resulting temperate continental climate and its stable, predictable seasons, makes this an ideal area for grapevine cultivation. Around 258 international and autochthonous varieties are grown in Croatia today. The number of autochthonous varieties is close to 100. This has not always been the case, however.
