Ilok – historical wine town embraced by Danube river
Ilok, the pearl of east Croatia, located in the middle of central Danube, is a unique picturesque place surrounded by the river and slopes of Fruska Gora hill. Ilok historic core is a nationally protected heritage of highest level and international importance. There is a medieval complex (14th-15th century) with a fortress, church of St. John Capistrano-Apostle of Europe, old wine cellars, rare Turkish monuments „Turbe“ and „Hamam“, castle Odescalchi – Museum of Ilok, archaeological artefacts in situ, protected green park and nature.
Living along the Danube means living along the backbone of Europe, being connected to ten countries and access to the sea, and also being part of the Croatian Danube region. Living on the Danube also means a privilege, because the mighty, wide waters of the eternal Danube bring with them the splendor of the landscape, boat and bicycle rides, the wealth of flora and fauna, and much more that can only be experienced when standing by its banks.
The specificity of the Iloka coast is that between the Danube and the old town on the hill, Dunavac stretches out, a permanent backwater that gives additional charm to the landscape, inviting for recreation, sports and enjoyment of nature. More than 100 years ago, there was a steamboat dock on the Ilok side of the Danube, which was rebuilt after the Homeland War and exile, and together with a promenade, beach, hotel and pier for passenger ships (cruisers), today forms a recreational and tourist complex.
Everything is easy to reach by foot, but if you choose to be active, you can enjoy fishing, swimming, tennis, golf, a tour via tourist train or via "Danubius" ship, the Danube Cycling route, walking trail Liska, "Sultans trail" hiking route and Ilok Wine Route, or just rest in peaceful, slow tourism atmosphere. Try the Croatian type of the Danube gastronomy: Ilok cevap, fish stew or Schnenokle as well as the premium wine and brandy. Tourism and cultural importance and value of Ilok and Vukovar Danube areas are recognised through winning the contest for EDEN award and getting the status of „National and European destination of excellence for cultural tourism.”
