Aljmas - a small, well-liked village of rich history and spiritual centre of the Croatian Danube region is located near the confluence of the Drava river in the Danube, an area called "European Amazonia". The Sanctuary of Our Lady in Aljmas is the most important Marian shrine in the whole of Slavonia. The newly built church is located along the Danube river in a Noah’s Ark shape, while the crossroads to Kalvarija is situated along a slope at the village entrance. Founded 170 years ago, it hosts over 100,000 pilgrims and tourists annually, and its inhabitants welcome them in beautifully landscaped gardens and courtyards of family farms. This area in Slavonia is considered to be one of the most attractive for a holiday home, because of its greenery and views of the Danube.
